Starship is a radically different kind of rocket, and as such nobody really expected it to work perfectly on the first try, says Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian who tracks the space business. "Everybody here is absolutely pumped to get off the pad and make it this far into the test flight," a SpaceX announcer said shortly after the rocket broke apart. But nobody seemed to care that the rocket made it just 40 miles or so from the company's launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
